                      Dear Bayshore Community,

It is an honor to be working in such a great school, supported by caring, dedicated staff and surrounded by caring and supportive families.  I have been a part of the Bayshore community for nearly five years, first as a teacher and now as a principal.  It is great to be here.  I have worked in several school districts and I have never been a part of such an inspiring group of students, faculty, and families.

I know we all share a common vision of improving student academic achievement while focusing on the overall growth of our students as well rounded people.  At Bayshore Elementary School this includes a strong academic curriculum, socialization with peers, physical fitness, and extracurricular programs like music and the arts. To do this we must work extremely hard to provide our students with experiences in and out of the classroom that will inspire them to be lifelong learners and explorers of the world.  It is important for us as a school community to ensure our students practice mutual respect, responsibility, and initiative through our own reflective practice.

Encouraging children to ask questions and facilitate them in finding answers to their questions by providing them with all the resources they need to do this, is our focus.  By linking students and the community with the resources needed to be successful, the school community will be able to reach the goals we all know we want our students to achieve.

I am excited to be here and know that “Together, we can shine brighter!”

                      Sincerely,

                      Jake Hodgson

                      Principal, Bayshore Elementary School

                      About The District

Bayshore Elementary School is part of a two-school district, Bayshore School District.  Bayshore Elementary School was named after the Bayshore community in which it was established.  The Bayshore community began as Bayshore City in 1932.  In 1939, the City dissolved and was an unincorporated part of San Mateo County, California until 1963.  The City of Brisbane tried to annex the Bayshore community and the Bayshore residents voted to be annexed to Daly City.  This small community is rich in history, cultural diversity, and a sense of uniqueness.  Bordered by larger neighborhoods in San Francisco, Daly City, and Brisbane, the Bayshore community is like a small town in a large urban surrounding.

Bayshore School District students stay with their classmates and peers for a nine-year period, grades K-8.  All the teachers know each other and the school settings are intimate.  Many students are 2nd generation students and some teachers have taught both the students and their parents.  The neighborhood has both quiet residential areas and busy industrial areas.  63% of the community members live in their own homes and 37% are renters.  Most individuals and families live in single-family homes or duplexes and the community has a wealth of small gardens.  There are very few housing complexes or apartment buildings.

Bayshore School District’s goals are to introduce children to the art and joy of learning and to overcome the limitations inherent to a small school district. The educational program:

                      • •Provides a balanced curriculum that focuses on fundamental academic skills as well as personal and social values
                      • •Sets academic standards of excellence and helps all children respect and meet those standards
                      • •Recognizes that all children are individuals and have differential needs that the school strives to meet
                      • •Fosters in its students an appreciation of the fine arts and other enriching activities
                      • •Provides a supportive, nurturing, safe and structured learning environment to promote achievement and success for all students
                      • •Respects the role of parents as caregivers, mentors, and equal partners in the educational process

                      School Description:

Bayshore Elementary School is located in the northeast corner of San Mateo County, less than one mile from San Francisco, and three blocks from the historic Cow Palace.  It is one of two small schools serving the Bayshore communities of Daly City and Brisbane.  Bayshore has an ethnically diverse population of students who live within walking distance to the school.  Bayshore has a dedicated teaching staff, supportive parents, a small community feeling, and a wealth of school spirit.  The school mascot is a bear and the school motto is, “Together, we can shine brighter!”

                      Mission Statement:

The Bayshore School District believes that education is a process through which staff, students, families and community work together to provide students with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experiences they need to contribute to and participate in society.

                      Opportunities for Parental Involvement:

Parents are encouraged to participate in daily activities, such as the morning announcement circle, and in the classrooms, playground, or cafeteria volunteering.  Parents also attend such events as Back to School Night, Family Literacy Night, Read Across America, school performances, special day time events, Music in Action concert series, and as field trip chaperones.  Parents participate in parent teacher conferences with teachers, support classroom activities, and assist in school fundraising activities.  There is an active Parent Teacher Organization which meets monthly and plans monthly events ranging from car washes and movie nights, to multi-cultural food events.  The district’s School Advisory Committee meets under the direction of the administration to discuss academic issues and plan expenditures.  The English Learner Advisory Council also meets with the School Advisory Committee.
