From the Superintendents

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire school district community, we want to welcome you to our website.

We feel very fortunate to be a part of the amazing Bayshore School District again.  Both of us worked in the district for years, Sue as a teacher, then principal, then superintendent, and Steve as a superintendent.  Sue returns after an eight year hiatus, first working for the San Mateo County Office of Education as Assistant Superintendent for Student Services, and for the last two years, as retired.  Steve returns after retiring from the superintendency two years ago.

While the district is one of the lowest funded districts in the Bay Area, its staff are among the most resourceful and dedicated we have every worked seen.  They are complimented by supportive parents and students who are focused, talented and hard-working.

The combination of students, teachers, principals and parents allow us to provide our students with the intellectual and academic tools and skills they will need to compete with the best students of the northern part of the peninsula when they enter high school.  Our academic program supports teaching both basic skills and higher level analytic skills.  One of the district’s outcomes has been the very high percentage of our eighth graders who have scored Proficient or Advanced on the state testing – last year, for example, more than 60% of the eighth graders scored Proficient or Advanced on the state’s Algebra test – a higher proportion than most surrounding school districts.

Despite our limited resources, we have been able to provide some enriching activities for our students.  For example, through the generosity of donors and the Woodlawn Foundation, we are able to provide a coherent, comprehensive vocal music program.  Our teachers work hard to obtain grants for special activities.  This year classes have participated in Outdoor Education, are visiting the Egyptian Museum in San Jose, are learning film-making, have visited the San Francisco Museum of Natural History.  Many more activities are planned for the spring.  All are educational and spring from our knowledge that learning is most effective when it is tied to real life experiences.

The academics, combined with special activities and united by a dedicated, talented teaching staff mean that despite the district’s low funding, we can offer our students an excellent education.  Please come by, chat with our teachers and visit classrooms and see for yourself.  Just stop by the school offices and set up a time for your visit.
